Ketogenic Diet: Did I Do Something Wrong?

Throughout my office life I have always been buying food during lunch time either at the cafeteria or somewhere near our office building. Me and my other colleagues really enjoy lunch time since we can relax and have good conversation over good food. But of course there are times that we eat the same food choices that are available or have some food delivered if we don’t have much time to eat out. Usually these foods are of course fast food which we can eat on a fast pace so we can have more time to rest and chat. One day (after new year) me and my colleagues came back to work with our office attires almost bursting. Everyone seemed to have a good holiday break and ate a lot obviously. We agreed to find a diet plan so we can lose some weight and try to be healthier too. Someone suggested Keto diet and we started to try it out as everyone in the group was on board.

So Far So Good, But Then…

We started to pack our lunches so we will no longer have to be tempted on the food choices that we usually eat before, the fatty and unhealthy ones. So far everything seems fine, for the first three weeks we already notice some changes in our body and losing weight a little. I was really happy for the group and for myself of course as it seems that we are doing it right. Little by little we are on our way to ketosis. According to Medical News Today, below are some facts on ketosis:

  • Ketosis occurs when the body does not have sufficient access to its primary fuel source, glucose.

  • Ketosis describes a condition where fat stores are broken down to produce energy, which also produces ketones, a type of acid.

  • As ketone levels rise, the acidity of the blood also increases, leading to ketoacidosis, a serious condition that can prove fatal.

  • People with type 1 diabetes are more likely to develop ketoacidosis, for which emergency medical treatment is required to avoid or treat diabetic coma.

  • Some people follow a ketogenic (low-carb) diet to try to lose weight by forcing the body to burn fat stores.

On the fourth week, I felt a little different than my usual self. I was also surprised that instead of losing, I have gained more weight. Well I have learned that there have been some wrong stuff that I have been doing. The food choices are right but I am consuming more than the correct amount of some foods that I eat.

Back on Track

After that I felt a little disheartened but I found a way to continue with what I am doing and get it right. I tried to find a cookbook for Keto so that every food preparation is perfect. I came across shorcutketo.com and it has great and honest review on amazing cookbooks that I have also shared with my colleagues. Of course every now and then I continue to check if I’m in the right track through more research. With this I also discovered that there could be some side effects from this form of diet which is commonly known as the keto flu which is pretty much normal and there’s nothing to worry about. According to Doc’s opinion:

The symptoms associated with ketosis are most often temporary and will usually pass in a couple of days. Therefore, they are sometimes called  “ketosis flu.” Some of these symptoms are caused by dehydration, and therefore intake of salt and water may be helpful.

For me, it’s okay to commit mistakes as long as you get back up again and not be scared to continue to achieve your goal.
